Food for thought

Mom says I should go with what I feel passionate about. Well I guess food qualifies. Now one of the more interesting things about me, I think, is my total disdain for chocolate. I have never brought a candy bar in my life. Though I think I'm making up for it now by eating 2 or 3 Vanilla Yogurt Protein Plus PowerBars a week! With that in mind, I thought I'd list my top 5 desserts. This is for 2 reasons. 1) To share the love of good food and 2) To show there's more to dessert than chocolate. In the event there are any women reading this, stick with me here.

5) Mom and Mine's Sour Cream Coffee Cake- Hey if you use half a pound of butter in anything, it's gotta taste pretty good to me. This is a classic "lick the spoon" batter. Yeah, it may not be cool, Carlito, but it's soooo good. Granted, you can't order this from us. Maybe if you give a little, you can get a little.

4) CPK's Key Lime Pie- I've had my fair share of key lime pies in my time. I've had them at Erik and Me in St. Charles, Pappadeaux in Westmont, Cheeseburger in Paradise in Downers Grove. It keeps coming back to the same problem. The filling is so tart. It's like you've just sucked on a lemon. Dat's not cool! But what I love about this one is the filling tastes really light. Like meringue. The graham cracker crust is firm, yet crumbly. And the spiral of fresh whipped cream with a twist of lime slice on the side makes for a fine presentation. Now to endorse the restaurant that I worked at takes some doing. But no matter what I think of the managers, the pie is worth coming. And I hear Red Lobster serves the same one. I haven't eaten there since gas was under $1.50! The pie could bring me back though.

3) Fresh Market's Apple Cinnamon Walnut Crumb Cake- I've had this once it knocked me out. I think almost any cake is better with something extra in it, whether it's fruits, nuts, vegetables, whatever. The chopped apple, crunchy walnut, and spices is a great mix. And heated in the microwave puts it over the top. I know a lot of places probably make a similar cake. But Fresh Market just knows what they're doing. This fancy grocery store is only in a couple of states, but they have some rock-solid stuff. PS Try their lamb kabobs!

2) Junior's Cheesecake- Brooklyn in the House! If you're a lifelong midwesterner, and don't know Junior's, shame on you. Tell me about Eli's cheesecake all you want. Listen, I like Eli's well enough. Try this and you never go back. Comparing any cheesecake to Junior's is like comparing takeout Chinese to PF Changs. You never go back. The sponge cake base just separates it from pretty much any other cheesecake. The sponge cake adds a smoooooooooooooooooth flavor you just don't get from grahams. (I wish I could've put that last sentence into a sound byte!) The fruit flavored ones are special. Apple crumb, peach crumb, cherry. They have a fruit sampler cheesecake that is great for variety. A classic. Plain and simple.

1) Carole's Cookies- You may or may not know about these. If you don't, you are now enlightened. Simply stated, the perfect cookie. These cookies are huge, they're fresh, they're full of flavor. These are only available in a few areas around the country. I get mine at Whole Foods. They cost about $2.50 each. In fact I picked up 2 oatmeal raisin with pecan today. Drove 30 minutes to get 'em. I get cinnamon swirl when available. The next thing I want to try is their sugar cookie with some ice cream and fresh strawberries. Yeah yeah, you can have ch. chip, peanut butter, white chocolate macademia nut... I microwave mine for about 33.6 seconds and then go nuts. If I'm really feeling into it, I'll heat up a cinnamon one, and scoop some vanilla ice cream on top! Oh yeah babe...

OK, by this time you're either salivating or ready to pass out. I'm guessing my dad is in the latter category...

Old days

It can get tough when you move around as much as I have in my life. It can be a challenge to sustain maintain friendships. Moving several times as a teenager was not always easy. But it was probably necessary. If I hadn't come to Illinois, who knows what would have happened to me. Considering what I was doing at St. Joe's HS in NJ, I certainly would not have made it to Gordon College. I was average in academics and had no social life. I mean, I didn't care, I felt like such an outcast.

And people say perception is reality. For me it was. The way I saw myself was everything. It still is. It is for you who are reading no matter how old or young you are. Maybe I'll be able to totally practice what I preach. I know I screw up. I just try to not to beat myself up over it anymore. At least I know I've got something better coming whether in the near future or later. I think the song "Right on Time" by Randy Travis says it best.

I may still regret some moments, but it's just part of the ride. I count myself
among the fortunate ones who have made it to the other side. We've all done time
with the devil and I've done mine. It took a while to get here, but I'm right on
time.
Well I'm reading a book by John Maxwell. Winning With People. I've only gotten through the introduction and I already figured something out. For someone who cares as much as I do, I realize some things need to change. And what I realize is you can't give away what you do not have. Actually, I think I heard that on Dr. Phil. Anyway, the point is if you don't love yourself, you can't love other people. Makes cents ;)

Why do I mention things like this in public? I don't know for sure. I guess in contrast to my NY rants, I want to do a little building back up. And sometimes you've got to knock down the tower and get back to the foundation to build the building back up right.

Jim Croce

I picked up another Jim Croce record last week. My last one had 41 songs and this has one has 50. That's the one thing about short songs, you can get a lot more of them on each CD. With a Led Zeppelin record, you can get three songs on each one and they lyrics make no sense anyway.

So there were a few songs I had not heard, and while some were gems, some sounded very similar too each other. The similar sounding tunes were his duets with his wife Ingrid from the early days. The best one is Child of Midnight, not a song for children by the way. The three songs from the later days, More Than That Tomorrow. Maybe Tomorrow, And I Remember Her are excellent. "Remember" is a gem that only a handful of us have been fortunate enough to hear. A story about a guy who meets a woman working in Paris and I'll leave it at that.

Mom gives me a little bit of flack about liking Croce. Hell, the guy died eight years before I was born! But he writes quick, relatable songs. The words are the key, the stories are unique, and the guitars and whatever other instruments are used just enhance the message (the harpsichord on Time in a Bottle). Thanks for the music, Jim.

Another night, another Met loss

And here I am in my dungeon drowning my sorrows in Oreos and milk... Nah, I'm numb to the pain of the Mets. I've been numb since last week. But that's OK, I have a whole new plethora of acupunture needles in me from the Jets. And I have to live on it for seven days until the Fins game.

I'm trying to get back into the Giants. I don't know what it is. It's getting hard to do it. Maybe it's the San Francisco playoff embarrassment from a few years ago, maybe it's Tom Coughlin doesn't do much for me, maybe it's that I've actually seen them win a Super Bowl in my lifetime. They used to be my guys with Simms, LT, Rodney Hampton, Bavaro, that little Meggett! I remember Phil McConkey's restaurant near the Houlihan's and movie theater in Secaucus, NJ. Maybe if I could get myself back into the Giants more than the Jets, I could be a little happier.

I'm actually looking forward to normalcy aka Ranger losses.

Big update!

Carlos Beltran just hit his 15th homer of the year! Fifteen! He's on a roll!!!!

Uggh. Go on strike baseball.

One freaking series

How many times? I've said it time after time. Every time the Jets have high expectations going into a season, something catastrophic happens. In 1999, it was Vinny tearing his Achilles at halftime. This year, just the realization they suck.

One series. Run, run, run = touchdown. It's not even midway through the second quarter as I write this and this game is over. Watching the damn Patriots, there is no way they're losing the division. The f'n Nazis will make it 4 of 5 in all likelihood, at least in division titles. And the Jets are not doing anything towards getting to the Super Bowl until they can get home field in the playoffs and that means winning the AFC East. And anyone who thinks "Oh they'll rebound, they have Miami next week," you know what, stick it where the sun don't shine. You are delusional.

Look at this schedule and you tell me. At least they didn't break our hearts in December this year.

The New York Rangers have more hope than the Jets. Hell, the New York soccer Cosmos have more hope than the Jets and they went out of business 20 years ago! Absolutely disgusting.

Agassi-Blake

That was simply the best tennis macth I have ever watched. With the New York crowd, the young American against the American legend, the fact that it went until 1 in the morning, it was through the roof. The only sad thing is it was in the quarterfinals, and not later. But chances are Federer wins it anyway.

Buck the Fraves Buck the Fraves Buck the Fraves

I will never use foul language on this site. This is as clsoe as I will come.

Is anybody surprised? IS ANYBODY SURPRISED?!?!?!?!?!

We get swept as ALWAYS happens to this piece of crap franchise, the New York Mets. They lose 4-3 in 10 innings.

Let's start with the 9th. Diaz doubles and moves to third on a groundout. So two outs, Jose Reyes up. A little pop fly to first stooge, Larry Jones.

In comes our beloved closer Braden Looper comes in. And there is no Met fan who has supported Braden Looper more than me. He sucks.

First pitch to the second stooge, Jeff F'nc'r. BOOM! Double into left center field. One pitch! And you weren't sure how, but you knew the Mets were losing. You knew they were more done than the USFL. McCann after working to a full count pops out to left. The third stooge of the night, Ryan Langerhans, who can go make a stupid baby with Bobby Cox, kills a line drive. Double. Run scores. Tie game. Hollandsworth, who may be the one problem the Braves have on their roster along with Kolb, gets an out, and Looper strikes out Giles. Yeah, Braden great timing.

So now, one question remains. Extra innings. What the hell will happen now to get the ice prick stabbed into my neck?

In comes Chris Reitsma. Matsui grounds out, Beltran singles, Floyd walks. Jim Brower relieves Reitsma. Up comes David Wright. Nobody else would I want up there. And indeed, he singles. And Beltran doesn't score! Chris Woodward, though, gets the job done like he has all year, and singles home Mr. 119 million dollars. Immediately Ramon Castro lines into a double play. Side retired. And they should've just called the game right there and awarded it to Hick City. The Mets had the 3-2 lead, but it felt like they were losing.

And Willie leaves Looper in! After blowing the save, he leaves him in! The first stooge singles, Andy Jones gets plunked on his fat, Julio Franco, who I believe is my great, great, grand-uncle five times removed, walks. Bases loaded, nobody out. Looper does his best Al Leiter playoff impression. In comes Shingo Takatsu. And I said out loud in the office I work out, you watch. He'll get two outs and then blow it. F'n'c'r' pops out. McCann pops out. And in comes in that piece of crap Langerhans. It goes to a full count. And at this point I'm crying on the inside, b/c I didn't make any bets for money. The hanging slowball. Line drive, 2 runs score. We suck. We lose. Hicks win.

I knew it was coming. I'm just numb now. The first question I will ask God when I arrive is how could you let vile and evil demons control a great sport like baseball?

Willie deserves a lot of blame. How could he put Looper out there in the 10th. And Loop just cost himself for sure a 6 million dollar option that the Mets might've picked up for next season. He's got me begging for Mel Rojas.

Any more questions why I get so angry?

For something other than sports...

I quit my job at California Pizza Kitchen. Two years and two days. It was a mutual decision/firing/resignation. But the bottom line is this. When I walked out through those two heavy doors and onto the sidewalk of Geneva Commons, I felt free. Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Cream, Jefferson Airplane, all the bands of the 60's who sang about being free have nothing on the kind of freedom I felt at that moment.

My time ended a little more abruptly than I'd have liked. Do I have any regrets? I trusted some people I wish I had not trusted. That's about all. Nobody, and I mean nobody, worked harder, was more loyal, and was more of a team player than me. So i have few less dollars right now. It's not like my social life takes a hit. Let's see what happens from here.

Rosenberg's stupid remark

I rarely criticze media types outside of Chicago. But on WFAN in New York, Sid Roseberg (a Giant fan) tells Joe Benigno (a Jet addict) that the Jet loss to Pittsburgh in the AFC playoffs last year wasn't devastating because the Jets weren't supposed to win. He compared it to the Giants embarrassment against SF a few years ago. He said that game was excrutiating, but the Jet loss wasn't that bad because they had no right winning that game.

I wish I could set up an audio link for this. That's the biggest pile of bull I've ever heard. How can the finish to that game not be excrutiating? They coached the game and kicked the game away! They had the Steelers on the ropes all night long! To blow that opportunity where they are not guaranteed anything from year to year at all, you cannot help but be deflated. And to think. It would have set up the rematch with New England. Then again, the finish of last year probably was better than if they had won. If they had lost to New England in the AFC title game, I'd probably be living in Latvia or somewhere. I would've seriously had to divorce myself from all sports.

It's getting to this point. The Rangers announced they've re-signed Craig Weller and Jed Ortmeyer. That's the best sports news I've had all week. It's the same old treadmill I've been pacing on for 10 years and counting...

Beauty by Benigno

WFAN's Joe Benigno delivers another beautiful rant on the dead Mets on wfan.com today. God I hate these losses, love those rants. It's about the only thing that keeps me going through all the pain and aggravation. Then he turns it into a beautiful caution flag about the Jets. He's expecting a blowup, just where is it going to happen. Classic quotes:

"When is the stick going up my rear end? I want to know?!"
"I'm insane and I belong in an institution."
"I am seriously somebody who needs psychologial treatment."
"I'm going into Met and Jet rehab."

You know, we didn't have a radio station when I was in college. But I did my senior project as a radio show summing up the Gordon College Women's volleyball team which went over huge. And over four years, I watched some downright disasters, losing championship games at home and semifinal games as the top seed in conference. And oh to think of some of the things I would have said if I was on the radio. Then again, if I had tried this in college, if I'd been straight and candid, I'd have been fired immediately.

A Met microcosm

I like using words like that.

You know, some people wonder why I get so frustrated with my teams. All you have to do is watch the Mets-Braves game of today to know. And since the game was on Turner BS, I had the displeasure of quivering through nine hideous innings. The Mets face John Thomson, another pitcher who was brutal, got dipped in the magical waters of Mazzone/Cox Inc, and became good. He'd been doing bad lately so I knew the Mets were in trouble.

First inning, we go up 1-0. Jose Reyes uses his speed to get on base, steals second, and scores on a Carlos Beltran double. And boy, we'll get to Beltran in a couple of lines.

Three batters in to the Slaves' first inning, Larry Jones doubles, scores Marcus Giles. So much for "Scoreless" Stev Trachsel. And a homer to Andy Jones. 2-1 we trail. But Steve settled down and held the Slaves in check. Meanwhile, Thomson allows runners, but never a run. 3rd innning: First and second, one out Floyd and Wright come up. Floyd whiffs and wright flies to right. Inning over.

But nothing aggravated me more than the 7th. Diaz opens with a single. Trachsel comes up and can't bunt. He pops the ball into the air like Rey Ordonez used to do so well. One out.Reyes comes up. A dribbler down the third base line. Larry and Estrada watch the ball roll down the dirt and it stayed fair. An infield single! First and second, one out. Kaz Matsui up. He's actually been halfway decent. He walks! Bases loaded! One out! The heart of the order coming up.

Up steps Mr. October, the 119 million dollar man, Carlos Beltran. He works the count to 3-1. Now you don't want to walk the tying run, so he's going to see a strike from Kyle Davies. Fastball right over the middle, he FOULS IT OFF BEHND HIM!

I swear to God, I knew right then, he had blown his chance and the Mets were done. Absolutely finished. Sure enough next pitch, fly ball to shallow right field. It's caught by my new "favorite player" Jeff Francoeur. And third base coach Manny Acta sends Victor Diaz home against the ridiculous right arm of F'nc'r. Throw right on the money, Estrada blocks the plate, Diaz slides, and doesn't even reach the plate. Double play, side retired. Beltran fails miserably again.

Now they did tie the game at 2-2 in the 8th on a sac fly off the great relief pitcher Blaine Boyer. But when Victor Diaz to strand a runner at 2nd, I knew again the Mets wouldn't win.

And how many times will I have to watch Larry Jones get another big hit? Watch the Mets or Yankees get him once he gets about 38 years old. A 2-run homer off Trachsel. 4-2.

Kyle Farnsworth comes into close it. And this was typical of pretty much every Mets 9th inning. Marlon Anderson gets a pinch hit and the top of the order comes up. Reyes, the sparkplug, pops to short, failing to even move the runner over. Matsui, takes not even a half ass swing at the ball. It looked like he didn't know if he wanted to bunt or swing and miss. He pops out. And up comes Beltran. Three pitches. Three strikes. Three outs. Game over. Year officially over.

Beltran's first season is officially a thorough failure. Is he a bust? No, not yet. But with another season like this, he's well on his way to surpassing Roger Cedeno, Juan Samuel, Mo Vaughn, Roberto Alomar, George Foster, Bobby Bonilla, and Gregg Jeffries as the biggest BUST in the 43-year history of this franchise.

So, Omar Minaya, how is the filet mingon going down tonight? A little harder to chew it tonight? Fred Wilpon, how's the Chableis tasting now? Just another typical Mets loss to Turner's BS. Disgusting.

The idea of fantasy sports

Why? Why are we so into fantasy sports? It's such a rage with magazines, TV shows, radio shows, Internet sites, and the like all offering leagues and tips on how to succeed in them. And it's not about to fade away. Why are these such the rage? And why do I spend 15-30 minutes of every morning checking results, analyzing matchups, and agonize over who to play and who to bench on a particular day?

First, I think it's almost a fun way of betting without actually betting, at least for me since I never seem to have money on the line. Another key: When your teams are sucking like McDonald's milkshakes (as mine tend to do), it's good to have something to root for. More than that, it keeps your attention off your misery and frustration.

The key is this. People, especially men, love power and control. Very very few of us will have jobs in pro sports. This is like playing manager/coach and general manager of your own franchise. So there's a power thing. And think about what you do day to day. Rank players. Draft. Change lineups. Make trades. Cut disappointments. Sign up and comers. Talk a little trash to the opponents you don't like. (If you really want). Pray for the best. In other words, do the day to day operations of the job you will never have. It's kind of like fruitless dreaming. Hence the name fantasy. Well, I'm just throwing out a few thoughts.

If only there was a decent paycheck behind a job well done...

The deal is this

Man this is so bizarre. There's this woman who's managing at the CPK who's in her second of three weeks here. She's from Kansas City and I guess three or four years older than me. I think she seriously likes me. I've never had a manger link arms with me and walk with me around the restaurant.

We had a contest, 4 servers against 4. She and another manager basically drafted who they wanted on their team and she chose me with the first overall pick! Little things like that.

This part of my life is like a country song. The women who seem most attracted to me will qualify for Social Security within 10 years. I don't envision my wedding night like that. And this is an old theme coming back. Time and distance. I think if we'd met somewhere else, we might go out. I'm speculating, but hey, that's about all I can do. It's not like I'm about to make a move on my "boss."

I don't know, I guess I still wish I had Jen, a girl I almost dated in college. I guess she's at Mount Ida College in Newton, MA with a full time job and I hope life treats her well. It's not that I'm not over her, I am. She was just really special.

Dating is just bizarre. I wonder how many people I know are dating just so they can say they're dating. That's for the wrong reasons. If you're in love with love, the fling ain't going to last. It's as simple as that. Sometimes, I feel a little bit lonely and rejected. Don't get me wrong. But hey, I'm not going to take the first girl who comes along. I'm not going to take the quick pleasure if I know I'll probably be hurt later on. Then again, it's easy to say when you're typing the words on a keyboard and they appear on a computer screen.

Sports thoughts

Well, my Mets had a good shot, but they obviously choked. Losing 2 of 3 at home to Phillly after winning the first game so dramatically is the tip of the iceberg. Now it's a 10-game road trip which will be the final nail in the coffin.

3 against Florida. We're facing Willis, Beckett, and Burnett.
3 against Atlanta. Enough said. Those pricks.
4 against st. Louis. The best team in baseball.

If we go 5-5 it'll be a miracle. It's been a good season. We've improved form the last 4 years. We've got some good young kids. But there is an ingredient missing. The perfect find would be a power hitting second baseman. We need a run producer who can drive in Reyes and Beltran. Cairo is playing too much. He needs to be a role player. Matsui is starting once a week which is one time too many.

I feel good with the pitching, though I'd prefer Looper setting up, not closing. But how often can you find a Billy Wagner or Brad Lidge?

The Liberty are done and they were never really in it anyway.

One week till football and thank God. I'm going to start on the NFC.

I think if the Giants can stop the run on defense, they will make the playoffs. They could very well be the breakout team this year. Eli is starting full time, Burress is in at WR, Brandon Jacobs will be a solid short yard rusher, Kareem McKenzie is at right tackle, and Jeremy Shockey is poised to return to his rookie form. This offense could be special as long as Eli is efficient and doesn't turn the ball over.

I pick Philly, Carolina, Minnesota, and Seattle to win their divisions with the Giants and Bucs taking wild card spots. Dallas will make it if the Giants don't and I think Green Bay will be brutal on defense, bringing them down. Arizona could have an interesting offense with Kurt Warner, JJ Arrington, Larry Fitzgerald, and Anquan Boldin. As for my adopted locals the Bears, well health is everything. I want to see two things. Can Kyle Orton become a decent starter? I personally would have started out with Jeff Blake at QB. With the speed of these receivers, I'd play the QB who throws a great deep pass. And two, who will emerge at running back. Thomas Jones is the incumbent. Cedric Benson held out longer than my last girlfriend, and Adrian Peterson of all people led the team in rushing during the pre-season.

Over to the AFC. I don't know what to thin about my team. Every time the Jets have high expectations going into a season, they always collapse. 1982. Walt Michaels gets fired and Richard Todd gets traded to New Orleans. 1999. Vinny Testaverde tears his Achilles in the first game and the season's torn with it. So I get a little uneasy when I hear "experts" start to respect the Jets. And Sean Salisbury of ESPN said the Jets have the worst QB situation of ANY TEAM in the NFL. Yeah right Sean. The only way we have that problem is if you bring your lazy ass out of retirement and put on a green and white helmet. I'm not exactly shuddering if Jay Fiedler has to take over.

There doesn't seem to be a huge weakness. But there are some little questions that need to be answered. Can Chad get through the season healthy? How long will it take him to adjust to new offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger's new offense? (I just wanted to type Heimerdinger!) Can Derrick Blaylock step in for the departed Lamont Jordan (who will be incredible with Oakland). Who will play DT alongside Dewayne Robertson? Can John Abraham stay on the field for a change? Can the aging left side of the offensive line stay healthy, which seemingly the whole team did last year?

I pick the Patsies, Ravens, Colts, and Chiefs with the Jets and Steelers getting wild card spots. The Bills and Chargers will come very close, but not close enough. I wonder if San Diego is a 1-year wonder or if they will have another great season. They have Tomlinson, so that helps. But they're not going to sneak up on teams like they did last year. The Raiders will have the biggest discrepancy between offense and defense ever. This will be like San Diego of the early 80's. Collins, Jordan, Moss, Porter, Curry. Wow. Now, the Bengals will be interesting. Carson Palmer may be ready to emerge and their defense is developing. But this isn't a team that has learned how to win yet. It ain't happening now. Pittsburgh will be solid, but I see something going awry. Whether Bettis gets old this year, Roethlisberger gets jinxed, or injuries amount, something just doesn't seem right. Oh maybe it was that piss poor performance in the AFC title game last year...

I'll be in 2 fantasy leagues and making my picks each week as always. Maybe I'll post them here. All 2 of you who read this will know about them!

Brad Faxon finally wins a PGA tour event. He's now 20 on the money list, up about 40 spots. Good to see him win after 4 years. When he gets on the senior tour in 6 years, he'll be unstoppable with his short game. Now I hear he has to have knee surgery. He won that tournament on a TORN FRICKIN' ACL! So much for faxin' it in!

Hockey on OLN!!! It's sad we're on OLN. The home of Survivor reruns and Monster truck rallies. At least the Rangers will be on TV a bunch of times. It's only because they wear the "New York" on the jersey. No other reason. But at least we get to watch hockey come October. And I WILL be in the United Center when the Blueshirts visit the United Center. With Nikolai Khabibulin goalkeeping for Chicago now, I'll probably see a shutout. Then again, I've never been to a Blackhawk game since I've been living here, so it will be a cool moment.
