On to the state tournament!

Yes!

Wheaton Academy knocks off St. Francis 2-1 to advance to the Elite 8 state tournament this weekend in Naperville. For me any WA victory over St. Francis is sweet, but one to advance to a state tournament, well to quote Ric Flair, WHOOOOOOO!

Now it's us against Sycamore, probably the best team in Class A soccer. But Marmion tied them 1-1 and we beat Marmion twice this season.

Our team looks solid. Goalie Joe Selvaggio has given up just 16 goals in 20 games this year, less than 1 per game. No goalie is great without a reliable defense, and WA's with seniors Hunter Long and Colin Finch, has allowed 2 or more goals a game only twice this year.

Jason VanderVeen (who scored twice against the Spartans despite battling a flu bug), Alex Earl, and Tyler Keith our are top three scorers and they will have to utilize their excellent outside speed to get past Sycamore's aggressive (or dirty) defenders.

If WA can win this one, I say we have an excellent shot at winning the whole thing. Fenwick is out and Peoria Notre Dame and St. Viator are on the opposite side of the bracket. I'll be at North Central College Friday night and I'll give my report and thoughts on the game by Saturday. Will Wheaton Academy win girls and guys soccer state titles in one calendar year after never having won a state title in 130 years? Hmm, that wouldn't be bad... Let's Go Warriors!
