The idea of fantasy sports

Why? Why are we so into fantasy sports? It's such a rage with magazines, TV shows, radio shows, Internet sites, and the like all offering leagues and tips on how to succeed in them. And it's not about to fade away. Why are these such the rage? And why do I spend 15-30 minutes of every morning checking results, analyzing matchups, and agonize over who to play and who to bench on a particular day?

First, I think it's almost a fun way of betting without actually betting, at least for me since I never seem to have money on the line. Another key: When your teams are sucking like McDonald's milkshakes (as mine tend to do), it's good to have something to root for. More than that, it keeps your attention off your misery and frustration.

The key is this. People, especially men, love power and control. Very very few of us will have jobs in pro sports. This is like playing manager/coach and general manager of your own franchise. So there's a power thing. And think about what you do day to day. Rank players. Draft. Change lineups. Make trades. Cut disappointments. Sign up and comers. Talk a little trash to the opponents you don't like. (If you really want). Pray for the best. In other words, do the day to day operations of the job you will never have. It's kind of like fruitless dreaming. Hence the name fantasy. Well, I'm just throwing out a few thoughts.

If only there was a decent paycheck behind a job well done...
